TRAVS NOW 5.5 UP ON CARDS
The Arkansas Travelers took advantage of three
Cardinals errors in an 8-4 win over the
Springfield Cardinals on Thursday night at Ray
Winder Field in Little Rock. The Travs are now
5.5 games up on Springfield in the Texas
League’s East Division.
Cards starter Chris Lambert struggled a bit with
his control in the early going. After giving up
a one-out double to Tommy Murphy, Lambert issued
back-to-back walks to load the bases. Jason
Aspito’s sac fly brought home Porter for a 1-0
lead. Brent Del Chiaro would follow with a
two-out single, scoring Greg Porter from third
for a 2-0 lead.
The Travs would benefit from two Cards errors in
the third, scoring two unearned runs for a 4-0
lead.
After a one-out walk to Rick Ankiel in the
fourth, Travs starter Kasey Olenberger (7-5)
surrendered a two-run shot to right field to
Aaron Herr, making it 4-2. For Herr, the homer
is his 18th of the year, tying him
with Travis Hanson for the team lead.
The Travs got another unearned run in the bottom
of the fourth, taking a 5-2 lead. In the fifth,
they would chase Chris Lambert (2-4), picking up
consecutive doubles for a 6-2 lead. Josh
Axelson came out of the Cards bullpen with two
outs in the fourth and immediately gave up an
RBI single to Jason Aspito, making it a 7-2
Travs advantage. Axelson would settle down
though, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings on the
night. Lambert allowed seven runs on six hits
on the night, but only four were earned.
Lambert walked three and hit a batter, while
striking out one.
Springfield got a run back in the sixth, as Rick
Ankiel doubled home Kevin Estrada, who opened
the sixth with a double. The RBI for Ankiel
gives him two in two games since returning from
the Midwest League’s Swing of the Quad Cities.
Arkansas
picked up a run to cap their scoring in the
bottom of the eighth. Cards reliever Alan
Benes, making just his third appearance since
joining Springfield, allowed a two-out RBI
double to Howie Kendrick, making it 8-3.
The Cards rounded out their scoring in the
ninth, as Aaron Herr led off the inning with a
double off the wall in right field and later
scored from third on a sac fly from Gabe
Johnson.
