All Travs on Friday Night
The Springfield Cardinals suffered a 15-0 setback at the hands of the
Arkansas Travelers on Friday night at Ray Winder Field in Little Rock.
The Travs broke the game open with eight runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning, taking a commanding 14-0 lead. Arkansas got to Cards
starter Stuart Pomeranz and chased him after five innings. The Travs
got a run in the first and then another in the third, taking a 2-0
lead. Howie Kendrick’s two-run homer to left would make it 4-0 Travs in
the fifth. Pomeranz (2-5) pitched five innings, allowing four earned
runs on five hits.
The Travs got two in the sixth against Jeremy Cook then exploded for
eight runs in the seventh against Cook and reliever Kevin Ool. Mike
Napoli started the inning with his Texas League-leading 22nd homer of
the year, a solo drive to right field.
Erick Aybar had a great night offensively for the Travs, going 3-4,
while knocking in three and scoring three runs.
Arkansas starter Daniel Davidson (11-5) kept the Cards off-balance
all night, working seven scoreless frames, allowing seven hits.
Tyler Minges and Papo Bolivar each had two hits to lead Springfield
offensively. Bolivar was hit on the left elbow in the eighth inning and
was removed from the game for precautionary reasons.
The Cards have now lost two straight and fall to 16-23 in the second
half, marking the first time this year that the Cards have been seven
games under the .500 mark. The Cardinals are now 6.5 games back of
first-place Arkansas in the East Division. Springfield sends Jeremy
Cummings (5-3) to the mound against Angels prospect Jered Weaver (1-0)
of the Travelers. Game time from Little Rock is 7:10pm on Saturday
night. The Cards return to Hammons Field on Thursday, August 11th to
face the Midland RockHounds as well as former SMS Bear Jason Hart and
