Boyd Homers Twice, Drives in Six

The Springfield Cardinals hit a season-high five home runs and equaled their season-best in runs scored, hammering the Tulsa Drillers by a final score of 13-5 on Monday night at Drillers Stadium.  The Cards improve to 16-21 with the win, taking two of five in the series against the Drillers.

Shaun Boyd had a career night, becoming the first Cards player this year to record six RBIs in a single game.  Boyd had a pair of three-run homers in addition to a single, going 3-5 on the night.  The two home runs for Boyd give him four on the year, but three in his last two games.

Springfield starter Jeremy Cummings (5-3) pitched into the seventh inning, giving up five runs on six hits over 6.1 innings, while picking up his third straight win.

Aaron Herr’s solo homer in the first inning gave the Cards a 1-0 lead, his 17th of the year.  Herr is now tied with Tyler Minges for the team lead in homers.

Jud Thigpen’s two-run blast to left gave Tulsa their only lead of the game at 2-1 in the first inning.

The Cards took the lead for good, posting eight runs in the fourth and taking a 9-2 lead.  Gabe Johnson’s two-run shot, his second of the year and second in as many games, gave the Cards a 3-2 lead.  Jeremy Cummings’ suicide-squeeze brought in a run to make it 4-2.  Boyd followed with a three-run blast, making it 7-2.  Travis Hanson and Gabe Johnson capped the inning with run-scoring hits, as the Cards kept the pressure on Tulsa starter Zack Parker (10-7), making it 9-2.

The Drillers got a run back to make it 9-3 in the fourth, as Tino Sanchez knocked in a run with a sac fly.  Boyd connected again in the fifth though, blasting his second three-run homer to left-center against Tulsa reliever Yusuke Arakawa, making it 12-3.

Tulsa got a run in the fifth and another in the seventh, making it 12-5.  Brendan Ryan finished the scoring, picking up the Cards fifth homer of the night by blasting a solo shot to left-center in the eighth, giving the Cards their 13th run of the night, the third time they've scored 13 in a game.

Andy Cavazos and Jeremy Cook worked the final 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Springfield is now 2-3 on the current 13-game road trip and now 4.5 games back of first place Arkansas.  The Cardinals travel to Little Rock on Tuesday night to take on the Travelers in the first game of a five-game series.  Jordan Pals (5-8) takes on Steven Shell of Arkansas.  Game time from Ray Winder Field in Little Rock is 7:10pm.  The Cardinals return to Hammons Field on Thursday, August 11 to take on the Midland RockHounds.  Don't forget about AM Pyrotechnics Friday Night Fireworks coming up on Friday, August 12 or St. John's Sports Medicine T-Shirt Giveaway on Saturday, August 13.  Tickets are always available at (417) 863-2143 or online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
