Cards get 1 hit shut-out to go above .500 mark for the first time in team history.

For the first time in team history, the Springfield Cardinals are over the .500 mark.  The Cardinals blanked the Frisco RoughRiders on Sunday afternoon by a final score of 2-0 in front of 7,410 at Hammons Field.

Jeremy Cummings was overpowering, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball.  Cummings (1-0) allowed a two-out single to Springfield native Jason Hart in the first inning.  The right-hander, making just his second appearance since being sent to Springfield from Triple-A Memphis, retired all 19 batters he faced there after.  Cummings allowed just the one hit, while striking out five.

Frisco starter Edison Volquez was outstanding in his own right, making his Double-A debut after just being called up from Bakersfield of the California League.  Volquez didn’t allow a hit, until Shaun Boyd’s two-out single in the fifth.  In a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth, Papo Bolivar took Volquez deep to center field with two outs.  For Bolivar, it was his fourth homer of the year, and first since May 7th at Corpus Christi.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth, Juan Diaz gave the Cardinals some breathing room with a mammoth home run to center field.  For Diaz, he becomes the first Cards player to homer in three consecutive games.  It’s also the fifth homer of the year for Diaz, all five coming in the last eight days.

Evan Rust came on for Cory Doyne, who worked a scoreless, hitless eighth inning.  Rust issued a one-out walk to Ruddy Yan in the ninth, but got Drew Meyer to pop up to left, then struck out Springfield native Jason Hart, looking on a 3-2 pitch.  Rust earned his fourth save with the scoreless ninth, giving the Cardinals their first sweep in team history.  The shutout is the third of the season for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals have now won four straight for the first time in franchise history, moving to one game over .500 at 29-28.  The Cards take a day off on Monday before continuing the home stand on Tuesday night against the Division-rival Wichita Wranglers.  Chris Lambert (0-1) makes just his second start since being promoted from Palm Beach, as he takes on Kyle Middleton of Wichita.  Game time on Tuesday night at Hammons Field is 7:10pm.  Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 and online at www.springfieldcardinals.com.
