CARDS GET OFFENSIVE IN
13-7 WIN OVER TRAVSThe
Springfield Cardinals put up a season-best 13
runs in a hard-earned 13-7 win over the Arkansas
Travelers on Sunday afternoon at Ray Winder
Field. For the Cardinals, it's their first win
in Little Rock in six tries and just the third
win over the Travs in 11 games.
The Cardinals blew a 7-0 lead, as the Travs
roared back to tie the game in the fourth
inning. Springfield scored the game's final six
runs though, moving over the .500 mark at 32-31.
A seven-run second inning made it look like
it was going to be an easy day for the Cards.
Aaron Herr's RBI single put Springfield on the
board at 1-0. Right behind Herr, Kevin Estrada
picked up his first of three hits on the day.
Estrada blasted a two-run shot to right-center
field, his fourth of the year, making it 3-0.
After hits by Shaun Boyd and Travis Hanson,
Robinson Cancel ripped a two-run single, giving
the Cards a 5-0 lead. Tyler Minges' RBI double
made it 6-0, chasing Arkansas starter Delvin
James from the game. Minges would round out the
inning, scoring from third base, as Papo Bolivar
would reach on an error, making it 7-0 in the
second.
Cards starter Chris Lambert looked good
early, but finally allowed a solo homer to
Alberto Callaspo in the bottom of the third with
two outs, making it 7-1. In the fourth, Lambert
struggled and was unable to get out of the
inning. Mike Napoli led off the frame with his
tenth homer of the year, making it 7-2. With
one out, four straight hitters reached against
Lambert. Brent Del Chiaro walked with the bases
loaded, forcing in a run to make it 7-3.
Lambert was chased with a 7-5 lead, turning it
over to Oscar Alvarez with runners at second and
third and two outs. Alvarez would allow a hit
to Erick Aybar, as the Travs tied the game at
7-7.
The Arkansas bullpen allowed the Cardinals to
re-take the lead in the top of the fifth.
Reliever Kasey Olenberger (2-3) walked the first
two men he faced, before giving way to Mark
O'Sullivan, who walked the first man he faced to
load the bases with no outs. Kevin Estrada
picked up an infield single, breaking the 7-7
tie with his third RBI of the day. Leading 8-7
with one out, Travis Hanson ripped a two-run
single to right field, giving the Cards a 10-7
lead.
The Cards picked up three big runs in the
sixth, taking a commanding 13-7 lead. Juan Diaz
reached on an error by third baseman Greg
Porter. After a Tyler Minges single put runners
at first and second, Aaron Herr hammered a pitch
over the wall in center field, a three-run shot
to give the Cards the 13-7 advantage. For Herr,
the homer is his sixth of the year, finishing
the day with a season-best four RBIs.
Anthony Rawson and Evan Rust followed 2.1
innings of scoreless relief by Oscar Alvarez
(4-2), who earned his first win in relief. Rust
finished the game by retiring all four men that
he faced.
The Cardinals send Jordan Pals (3-4) to the
mound on Monday night against Travs lefty Joe
Saunders (4-3). Game time on Monday night at
Ray Winder Field is 7:10pm. The Cardinals
return home to Hammons Field on Thursday, June
23. Tickets are always available by calling
